It is a failure of judgment that occurs with surprising frequency: someone selects a considered plant and delivers it into a cheap plastic pot. The plant loses half its presence in the same moment. The planter is as consequential as the plant — arguably more so, because the planter establishes the visual language before the eye reaches the foliage. Here is how to choose the right one.

Planter Materials: A Considered Account

Ceramic Ceramic divides into two distinct types: glazed and unglazed. Unglazed terracotta breathes — moisture passes through the walls and the root system is rarely without oxygen. Glazed ceramic restricts breathability; drainage holes are non-negotiable for any plant susceptible to overwatering, such as cacti. Ceramic holds moisture with consistency and carries enough mass to stabilise tall specimens in a crosswind. Concrete Concrete is an inherently industrial material — its particular grey weight suits the modern minimalist interior without requiring additional cues. Heavy to the point of immovability. Two qualifications: fresh concrete has a high alkalinity, pH approximately 12–13, which can distress acid-loving species until the chemistry stabilises; and its breathability is only average, making it a poor match for moisture-sensitive varieties. Metal Brass, copper, and stainless steel read as unambiguously contemporary. Brass and copper develop a patina over time that does not diminish the material — it deepens it. The decisive limitation: metal conducts heat rapidly. A planter in direct summer sun can reach temperatures sufficient to damage root tissue. Natural Fibre Woven baskets, seagrass, and rattan are warm materials — their organic texture is essential to the Nordic interior, and they breathe with a quality no ceramic can replicate. Size Selection: The Essential Proportions

Scale Principles: Planter diameter should fall between 1/3 and 1/2 of the plant’s canopy spread. Height-to-width ratio of approximately 1:1 or 1:1.5. Large plants at 130–180cm require planters with genuine mass for stability — a lightweight pot beneath a tall specimen is a tipping liability.

Designer Principles

Unified Visual Language Within a single space, planter styles should cohere. Vary size within the same material, or vary form within the same colour family. The alternative — a collection of mismatched pots assembled from different eras — reads as indecision rather than eclecticism.

Invest at the Point of Maximum Visibility Concentrate budget on the planter for the statement plant. That is where a client’s eye lands first; that is where the investment is legible. Economise elsewhere.

Function Is Not Secondary Planters must carry drainage holes, or a double-layer design that holds excess water below the root zone. Large planters should stand on wheels or protective pads — for mobility and for the floor beneath.

Room to Grow Choose a planter marginally larger than the current root ball — not dramatically so. An oversized pot retains water that roots cannot reach, and that moisture becomes a site for rot. The new diameter should generally exceed the previous by 5–8cm.
