Note: The ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) and the money tree (Pachira) are two different plants, often confused in searches. This guide covers the thick-leaved ZZ plant that stores water in rhizomes.

Light

Tolerates very low light but grows best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which scorches leaves. Survives even in deep interiors and meeting rooms.

Watering: dry side wins

About once a month in winter, twice a month in summer, and only after the soil has dried. The leading cause of death is overwatering, which rots the rhizomes.

Substrate, temperature, feeding

Free-draining mix in a pot with drainage; it likes being slightly root-bound. Normal indoor temperatures (15–24°C) are fine. Feed half-strength balanced liquid fertiliser about every two months in spring/summer; stop in winter.

Rescuing rotted rhizomes

Yellow leaves and soft rhizomes signal rot. Unpot, cut away rot, dry, replant in fresh dry mix, and withhold water about 10 days.

Office + feng shui appeal: Glossy, rounded leaves and prosperity associations make it popular for reception, executive offices and cashier areas. Its tolerance makes it a B2B favourite through long holidays.
