The Monstera deliciosa has become a design icon in Hong Kong interiors — those signature split leaves (fenestration) read as instant sophistication. Yet many owners find their plant simply won’t split, with new leaves emerging smaller and solid. The cause is rarely the plant; it’s almost always the environment.

For the full routine — light, watering, soil and temperature — see our Monstera care guide for Hong Kong.

Light: the number-one driver of fenestration — Monstera care

Monsteras need bright, indirect light. Light is the single most important factor in whether leaves split, ideal range roughly 1,000–2,500 foot-candles (about 10,000–27,000 lux). An east- or south-facing window behind a sheer curtain is ideal. Insufficient light shows clearly: leggy stems and small, solid leaves. Avoid harsh midday direct sun, which scorches the foliage.

Watering: let it dry, then soak

Water thoroughly once the top 2–4 cm of soil is dry, and never let it sit in water. Monsteras like consistent slight moisture but hate wet feet — root rot almost always traces back to overwatering. In a Hong Kong summer, evaporation is fast (roughly weekly); in winter and air-conditioned rooms, stretch the interval.

Humidity and temperature

Prefers 60–70% humidity, which helps new leaves unfurl. Ideal temperature 15–30°C; move indoors below 15°C. During the humid season, prioritise airflow to prevent mould; in dry, air-conditioned offices, group plants or run a humidifier.

Substrate and support

Use a free-draining mix (peat plus perlite or bark) in a pot with drainage holes. To get larger, fenestrated leaves, give the plant a moss pole to climb. Fenestration appears reliably only when maturity, climbing support, healthy roots and good light come together — age alone does not guarantee it.

Feeding

In the growing season, feed every 2–4 weeks with a balanced fertiliser diluted to about ¼ strength. Reduce in autumn and winter; flush the soil periodically.

Monstera FAQ

How much light does Monstera need indoors in Hong Kong?

Bright, indirect light works best. Avoid harsh direct sun for long periods. In air-conditioned offices, place near a window or use a grow light.

Why are my Monstera leaves not splitting?

Usually insufficient light or a young plant. Mature Monsteras develop fenestrations with consistent bright, indirect light.

How often should I water Monstera?

Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry. In HK AC rooms, this is often every 7–10 days depending on pot size and placement.

What should I do about yellow Monstera leaves?

Check for overwatering, poor drainage, or low light. Remove fully yellow older leaves and adjust watering and placement.

Where can I buy large office Monsteras in Hong Kong?

PlantShop.hk supplies 130–180 cm indoor Monsteras with delivery across Hong Kong for offices and corporate spaces.
