Since 2003, Hong Kong’s EPD has run the IAQ Certification Scheme for MVAC-equipped offices and public places.

Scheme basics

Voluntary, with Excellent and Good classes. Tests 8 pollutants: CO₂, TVOC, PM10, CO, NO₂, O₃, formaldehyde (HCHO), radon (Rn), plus biological indicators. A 2019 revision aligned with WHO, tightened limits, added short-term formaldehyde/NO₂ objectives and mould. Certificates displayed publicly, monitored over a five-year cycle.

The real role of plants (honest take)

Meeting IAQ standards comes down to ventilation, source control and MVAC — not plants. Plants are supplementary and perceptual (NASA research: real-world filtration too slow to replace ventilation). Plants lift how a space feels and ESG story, but compliance is engineering.
