Schefflera (Umbrella Plant) Care
Schefflera (umbrella plant) is one of Hong Kong’s most common, easiest office and home plants, in a large form (S. actinophylla) and a dwarf form (S. arboricola).
Light
Loves bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun; too little light causes leggy growth.
Watering
Water when the top inch dries, draining excess; reduce in winter. Overwatering causes yellowing and leaf drop.
Temperature and humidity
Likes warmth, above 15°C (18–32°C); around 40% humidity is better.
Substrate and feeding
Rich, free-draining, slightly acidic mix; avoid sogginess. Feed more in the growing season.
Pruning and propagation
If leggy, add light and prune. Propagate by spring cuttings.
Common problems
Leaf drop: stress from light, temperature swings, drafts or watering changes. Leaf spots: keep leaves dry.
Office note: Bushy umbrella foliage suits soft dividers or corner styling. In pet offices, place high.
