Balcony Bloom Bundle

Created especially for Hong Kong flat owners with a balcony or terrace, these three are all “blooming machines” — flowering in succession from spring through autumn, turning your outdoor space into a private garden.
• Bougainvillea (approx. 80-100 cm): Magenta bracts blaze with tropical passion; when in full bloom the whole plant is a spectacular focal point.

The Bougainvillea must go in the sunniest spot — the more sun, the more spectacular the bloom. The Nodding Clerodendron goes in a deeper corner of the balcony where half-day sun is enough — its flower clusters swaying in the breeze create breathtaking movement. The Lemon Tree needs the most sun to fruit, so place it at another sunny spot with good airflow; it doesn’t cope well with Hong Kong summer humidity. Arrange the three in a small U-shape — standing at the centre of your balcony, a turn in any direction reveals a different view. Add a few small ground-cover plants for extra layering.

An office terrace planted with these three becomes a genuine asset rather than an afterthought. The Bougainvillea along the railing is visible from the street when in bloom — a quiet, distinctive signal that the people inside pay attention to their surroundings. The Nodding Clerodendron near the entrance allows fragrance to drift inward when the door is open, which does more for staff mood than most wellness initiatives. ❶ Tough love for the Bougainvillea. This plant blooms most generously when it is slightly stressed — ample sun and restrained watering signal to the plant that it is time to flower rather than simply grow. If you find yourself with lush green leaves and few bracts, water less and move it to a sunnier position.
❷ Leave the Nodding Clerodendron in peace during flowering. It dislikes being repositioned once buds have formed. On windy days, check the cascading clusters and gently separate any that have tangled, rather than leaving them to pull on each other.
❸ Pollinate the Lemon Tree by hand. A soft artist’s brush moved gently from blossom to blossom during flowering significantly improves fruit set. It takes five minutes and makes a meaningful difference to your eventual harvest.

Arrange the Bougainvillea along the balcony railing so the bracts spill outward. Place the Nodding Clerodendron slightly behind and to one side, where its cascading clusters can hang freely. Set the Lemon Tree at the opposite corner, in the best light. Add a small bistro chair and a low side table between them. On a warm evening, with the Clerodendron in flower and a glass of something cold in hand, the view of the city beyond becomes incidental — the balcony itself is the destination. The effect is less rooftop terrace, more private garden in a city that rarely offers such things.
