Make room for an ordinary laundry day
On laundry day, a drying rack, dehumidifier and plant may all compete for the space beside the window. In a Hong Kong flat, their positions often have to be considered together. Plants can share a room with a dehumidifier, provided they do not block its ventilation space or sit in continuous direct airflow. The machine, room and species all matter.
Read the appliance’s clearance requirements, then follow the air as it leaves the outlet. A pot may be well to one side while its upper leaves reach into the airflow. Similar-looking machines can have different outlet positions, so a single rule in centimetres would offer little help.
Read the air and the pot separately
The humidity meter describes the air around it; the root ball holds a separate store of water. Check that store before responding to a lower room-humidity reading with the watering can. Pot size, potting mix and root development can produce different drying rates.
The RHS houseplant guide explains that humidity affects water loss from plants and that requirements differ. Consider light, temperature and potting-mix condition together instead of declaring one percentage ideal for every plant.
Continue checking moisture according to the species. A dry surface does not necessarily mean the centre of a large pot is dry. The amount of water collected by the machine cannot tell you how much water a particular plant has lost.
Give airflow, daylight and water their own routes
- Preserve the required appliance clearance. Check instructions for inlets, outlets, walls and furniture. Leaves, curtains and supports count as obstructions too.
- Avoid continuous direct airflow. Observe where air travels while the unit runs. If the outlet area feels warmer, consider that local condition rather than relying only on a thermometer elsewhere in the room.
- Retain suitable light for the plant. Moving it away from the machine should not mean pushing it into a dark corner. Assess daylight and normal curtain use in the alternative position.
- Keep water-handling routes clear. Removing the tank should not knock the plant. Water used for plant care must be kept away from the appliance and electrical leads.
If space is limited, reconsider the operating position or the size of the plant without compromising the appliance’s installation requirements.
Change the position, then watch what follows
Use the same temperature and humidity meter in a comparable position during ordinary operating hours. A reading beside the outlet one day cannot be compared directly with one by the door the next. The instrument provides context; the plant and potting mix still need inspection.
Keep other care reasonably consistent while recording machine hours, curtains, air conditioning and drying laundry. Note how moisture in the pot changes. Repotting, fertilising, pruning and changing the light at the same time make the effects difficult to separate.
Let the observed changes determine the review period. You need not wait for visible damage before moving foliage out of direct airflow, but a single day’s different reading is not a reason to sharply increase watering.

Look beyond the brown tip
Brown tips, drooping or yellowing can have more than one cause. Check whether affected leaves face the outlet, whether the mix is dry or wet and whether the plant has recently moved, been fertilised or experienced different air-conditioning settings. The University of Georgia’s discussion of houseplant problems also considers environmental changes and hot or cold draughts.
If a plant continues to wilt while its mix stays wet, simply adding water or misting leaves is not an adequate response. Keep a record and photographs of the whole plant, container and affected area when seeking species-specific advice. The right arrangement leaves the machine easy to use and the plant in conditions that suit it.
Three plants to observe in their own positions
- Areca Palm: Spreading fronds may reach towards the airflow even when the container appears clear of it. Assess the whole canopy.
- ZZ Plant: Do not water automatically because other plants in the room are being watered. Check its own root-zone moisture.
- Burgundy Rubber Plant: Compare foliage facing the outlet with the other side, while also checking light and potting mix.
